Passage 5

Sun exposure is a major contributing factor for melanoma skin cancer, the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 14,000 people diagnosed each year. A recent research suggests sunscreen alone should not be relied on to prevent malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

In the new study, scientists at the University of Manchester looked at the effects of UV light on the skin of mice at risk of melanoma. This allowed them to examine the effects of sunscreen in blocking the disease. “UV light targets the very genes protecting us from its own damaging effects, showing how dangerous this cancer-causing agent is,” said lead researcher Prof Richard Marais. Very importantly, this study provides proof that sunscreen doesn’t offer complete protection from the damaging effects of UV light. This work highlights the importance of combining sunscreen with other strategies to protect our skin, including wearing hats and loose fitting clothing, and seeking shade when the sun is at its strongest.

Passage 6

Destinations compete for the attention of would-be travelers everywhere: on billboards, in newspaper supplements, via online advertisements ― even in cinema.

In the world of travel industry product placement, few boons are better than having a movie shot on location. And no country knows this better than New Zealand, where the huge success of the Lord of the Rings franchise helped turn the country into one of the world’s most sought after travel destinations.

According to a survey taken after all three movies had been released, 6% of New Zealand visitors said the franchise was one of their main reasons for visiting the country. After the first film of The Hobbit trilogy was released in 2012, the New Zealand tourist board rebranded the entire country as “Middle-earth”. From January to September 2013, international visitor numbers were up nearly 10% ― with 8.3% of international visitors overall citing The Hobbit as their draw. (That means The Hobbit’s influence was about the same as “getting a good deal on flights”, which was the reason another 8.8% of foreign visitors gave).

20. According to the text, what’s the best way to attract would-be tourists?

A. Having a movie shot on location.

D. The factors that influence tourism.

Passage 5

Sun exposure is a major factor for melanoma skin cancer, the fifth common cancer in the UK, with more than 14,000 people diagnosed each year.可知D選項中的only factor與原文的major factor矛盾,故不選;而同樣根據本句中with more than 14,000 people diagnosed each year可知C選項正確;同時根據原文A recent research suggests sunscreen alone should not be relied on to prevent malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.可知A項的will not kill people不正確,以及B項中的adequate protection不正確。

18.【答案】A。 A recent research suggests sunscreen alone should not be relied on to prevent malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

UV light targets the very genes protecting us from its own damaging effects, showing how dangerous this cancer-causing agent is. This work highlights the importance of combining sunscreen with other strategies to protect our skin, including wearing hats and loose fitting clothing, and seeking shade when the sun is at its strongest.

Passage 6

20.【答案】A。 根據文章第二段的第一句話“In the world of travel product placement, few boons are better than having a movie shot on location.”

解析:根據文章第三段第三句 “From January to September 2013, international visitor numbers were up nearly 10% ― with 8.3% of international visitorsoverall citing The Hobbit as their draw. 根據第三段第二句“ After the first film of The Hobbit trilogy was released in 2012, ...”
